Fast Steering Mirrors (FSM) Overview 

ATA develops custom high performance Fast Steering Mirrors that enable real-time angular corrections in Pointing and Tracking Systems for directed energy systems, long range laser communications, and telescopes.  The products shown are examples of FSMs which ATA has built.  These mirrors are used in applications ranging from laboratory-based systems to airborne line of sight stabilization systems.  ATA has experience with space-qualifying components and is working towards developing a space-qualified fast steering mirror.  For information on our recent success click here.

FSM Features 

ATA FSMs can be designed to use metal (aluminum or beryllium), glass, silicon, or silicon carbide substrates depending on the specific requirements.  ATA has built mirrors that range from 1 inch aluminum mirrors with >7000 radians/sec2 acceleration capability to 12-inch, silicon carbide, reactionless mirrors with a 1kHz bandwidth and >300 rad/s2 acceleration capability.  ATA can provide mirrors with virtually any coating requirement from generic protected silver coatings to high reflectivity dielectric coatings designed for HEL applications.

What makes ATA steering mirrors exceed the performance of fast steering mirrors from other companies?  ATA has a long history in designing and fabricating sensors, actuators, flexures, and control systems.  ATA has produced very high efficiency actuators, including space qualified, redundant winding actuators.  ATA has produced non-contact linear displacement sensors capable of sub-nanometer resolution over 1mm or larger travel.  ATA manufactures the highest performance angular rate sensors with angular motion measurement capabilities below 40 nanoradians between 1Hz and 1kHz.  Combine these capabilities with our 30 year history of excellence in real-time controls and system development for precision sensing, measurement and control and you have a range of steering mirrors that simply beats the competition.
