Jr. Mechanical Engineer

Job Description

ATA is seeking an entry-level mechanical engineer or someone with similar design and hands-on experience to provide mechanical engineering support to diverse R&D programs and small-volume high-tech production contracts. The candidate is expected to be very hands-on and comfortable working in both an office and a laboratory or clean room setting. The candidate would be expected to help with mechanical design, drafting, fabricating, or overseeing the fabrication of mechanical parts, and assembling, high tech custom hardware. The candidate would show capability and interest in mechanical design and analysis, while taking responsibility for the integration, and test of precision optical subsystems for airborne and spacecraft applications that include alignment systems, scanning mirrors and fast steering mirrors, telescopes, gimbals, and other related optical pointing and stabilization systems.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with strong critical thinking skills, demonstrated self-starter characteristics, and be capable of designing and assembling mechanical hardware based on general directions from Senior Engineers. The candidate must be able to adapt between technology development projects and the formalisms (processes and procedures) associated with building space-qualified or production hardware.

Essential Functions:

  • - Assists with mechanical design of precision mechanisms and optical systems

  • - Creates mechanical drawings

  • - Oversees fabrication of custom machined parts

  • - Assists with analysis of various components (structural analysis, thermal analysis, etc.)

  • - Assists with assembly and test of various sensors, mechanisms, and optical systems

  • - Strong hands-on capability is required for this position

  • - Assists with writing procedures, reports, etc. and with the presentation of mechanical
      designs. Good communication skills are required (both verbal and written)

Supervisory Responsibility: 


Work Environment: 

This job operates in a professional office/engineering environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: 

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. 


Minimal travel may be required (<1 week per year)

Albuquerque, New Mexico 

Required Education and Experience: 

  • - Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience

  • - Basic experience with CAD software including mechanical design and drawings

  • - Hands-on experience with precision electro-mechanical assembly and test work

  • - Ability to quickly adapt to various different projects and types of work

  • - Ability to work on R&D projects as well as production projects simultaneously

  • - Ability to work independently or as part of a small team

  • - Must be able to attain and maintain a Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance
      (Note a clearance will not be required initially, but may be required in the future)

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • - Experience with SolidWorks™ modeling software

  • - Basic experience with finite element analysis software and methods

  • - Experience with data acquisition and processing hardware and software

  • - Demonstrated communication skills (technical writing, presentation, etc.)

  • - Demonstrated leadership skills
