Systems Engineer (Space Sensor)

Job Description

ATA is seeking an entry-level Systems Engineer with a desire to develop space-based sensors. The engineer will be a key member of an integrated team operating in a very dynamic environment.

Candidates must have a desire to join a team of engineers who are responsible for the design and development of LEO and GEO space payloads for EO/IR, laser, and image stabilization programs. Through mentorship with Senior Systems Engineers, a successful candidate should expect to interface with customers, team members, and leadership to serve as a key interface between engineering functional roles.

Essential Functions: 

  • - Develop and maintain system architectures for space base sensor payloads

  • - Serve as the interface point between electrical, mechanical, controls, and software functions
      across the program leadership team

  • - Development and maintenance of system-level requirements through allocation, decomposition,
      and derivation of customer requirements

  • - Develop and execute system Verification and Validation plans while ensuring all V&V events
      are traceable back to the source system requirements


  • - Systems Thinker – ability to think through the design of a complex sensor to determine
      the inter-relations between mechanical, electrical, controls, and software functions

  • - Requirements Communication and Management – ability to derive, decompose, allocate, manage
      and most importantly communicate requires amongst customers, team-members, and leadership

  • - Team Player – ability to communicate and coordinate team members through daily interactions
      and strong communication skills

Work Environment: 

This job operates in a professional/secure office and laboratory environment. This position routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, fax machines and other equipment as needed.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: 

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are nominally Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.


Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel will be required (less than 10%).

Required Education and Experience: 

  • - Must be a United States Citizen, able to obtain and maintain a U.S. DoD Security Clearance

  • - Bachelor of Science in relevant Engineering discipline

  • - Demonstrated leadership experience

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • - Master's degree or Ph.D. in Engineering or Physics

  • - Experience designing and developing laser communications, electro-optical, or pointing,
      tracking, and stabilization systems is highly desirable

  • - Current U.S. Department of Defense Security Clearance
