Senior Optical Scientist

Job Description

ATA is seeking an experienced Optical Scientist to multiple Air Force Research Laboratory Directed Energy Directorate contracts. The engineer will be an integral member of a joint Government and contractor team that operates in a very dynamic environment. The engineer’s duties will span High Energy Laser Beam Control and Optical Propagation and Compensation research and development activities in multiple laboratories and developmental systems and consist of formulating concepts, implementing and overseeing laboratory experiments, designing and building prototype system components, testing feasibility, modeling, and simulation, preparation for flight experiments and execution of flight experiments.

Essential Functions: 

  • - Systems Engineering analysis of requirements

  • - Laser and Optical System design

  • - Develop specific metrics for experimentation and system test, and guidance on laboratory
     
      methods to test individual system components

  • - Leadership of overall technical effort as it pertains to a final experimental design, component
     
      design and operational system performance and demonstration

  • - Experience with low and medium powered lasers, diode lasers, fiber lasers, and solid state
     
      lasers

  • - Experience in design, modeling, and analysis of High Energy Laser Propagation Experiments
     
      through Aero optical and distributed volume turbulence environments

  • - Experience in design, fabrication, testing of optical components and subsystems

  • - Experience developing and using optical modeling and data analysis tools such as ZEMAX

  • - Working knowledge of C++ programming

  • - Support Business Development activities, for example:

  • -- Support and/or lead customer interactions

  • -- Identify new opportunities with existing and/or new customers

  • -- Support the capture of new opportunities

  • -- Support proposals (e.g. lead sections involving technical area of responsibility, provide
     
      cost estimates, etc.)

  • - Represent ATA well with customers

  • - Perform all other duties as assigned

Work Environment: 

This job operates in a professional/secure office and laboratory environment. This position routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, fax machines and other equipment as needed.

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: 

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are nominally Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
 

Travel: 

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel will be required (less than 10%).
 

Required Education and Experience: 

  • - Master of Science in Physics, Mathematics, or Engineering and 10+ years of relevant experience

  • - Experience in optical propagation through atmospheric turbulence, and designing and building
     
      laser beam control system for Directed Energy Applications

  • - Must be able to attain a Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance

  • - Supervisory experience in a research and development environment

  • - Experience with low and medium powered lasers, diode lasers, fiber lasers and solid state
     
      lasers

  • - Experience in design, modeling, and analysis of High Energy Laser Propagation Experiments
     
      through Aero-optical and distributed volume turbulence environments

  • - Experience in design, fabrication, testing of optical components and subsystems

  • - Experience developing and using optical modeling and data analysis tools such as ZEMAX

  • - Excellent interpersonal skills and communication (written and oral) capabilities

  • - Experience providing engineering support in an environment that requires co-location with the
     
      customer

  • - Working knowledge of C++ programming

  • - Experience developing test plans

  • - Experience developing integration plans

  • - Demonstrated leadership experience

  • - Support business development/proposal activities

  • - Require minimum oversight to accomplish directed tasks

  • - Perform all duties as assigned

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • - Ph.D. and 6+ years of relevant experience in Physics, Mathematics, or Engineering

  • - Active Department of Defense Secret or Top Secret Security Clearance

  • - Experience managing optical laboratories and directing research activities

  • - Working knowledge of beam compensation and experience in design of wave-front correction
     
      techniques to mitigate atmospheric disturbances

  • - Experience advancing the Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) of laser propagation in areas
     
      of atmospheric disturbance

  • - Experience in business development and creating new program opportunities with new and
     
      existing customers
