Thermal Engineer

Job Description

ATA is seeking an early-career Thermal Engineer to support in-house engineering efforts as well as support the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Space Vehicles Advanced Technology (SVAT) contract. At ATA, the Thermal Engineer will provide thermal analysis and/or design services for ATA-developed systems and technologies in various phases of technology development. At AFRL, the engineer will be an integral member of a joint Government and contractor team that operates in a very dynamic environment. The engineer’s duties will span research and development in formulating concepts, system design, building mockups/prototypes, testing feasibility, designing and conducting experiments, modeling and simulation, preparation for flight experiments, and execution of flight experiments. In addition, the engineer may be required to assist on other ATA or SVAT contract-related tasks as needed, operating dynamically to provide services to both ATA-internal and external stakeholders.

Essential Functions: 

  • - Thermal system evaluation and analysis

  • - Thermal modeling using hand calculations and Thermal Desktop software

  • - Test/experiment design and execution with an emphasis on thermal-vacuum testing

  • - Developing specific metrics for system testing and performance

  • - Developing sub-system requirements to meet mission objectives

  • - Laboratory equipment operation and maintenance

  • - Technical presentation and writing

  • - Support Business Development activities, for example:

  • -- Support and/or lead customer interactions

  • -- Identify new opportunities with existing and/or new customers

  • -- Support the capture of new business opportunities

  • - Represent ATA well with customers

  • - Perform all other duties as assigned

Work Environment: 

This job operates in a professional/secure office environment and/or in a technical research laboratory. This position routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, fax machines and other equipment as needed. This position may also require frequent use of thermal and vacuum laboratory equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: 

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are nominally Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.


Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.

Required Education and Experience: 

  • - U.S. Citizen

  • - Bachelor of Science degree in in an engineering field related to thermal and fluids

  • - Ability to attain a Department of Defense Security Clearance

  • - Proficiency in using Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • - Strong technical understanding of thermal sciences and advanced mathematical concepts

  • - Experience performing computational engineering modeling and analysis

  • - Experience working in technical or laboratory environment

  • - Experience working on team-based engineering projects

  • - Experience using thermal and/or vacuum equipment

  • - Experience developing test plans and executing technical procedures

  • - The ideal candidate will provide the creativity and curiosity of a research engineer
      alongside the practicality and perspective of a production engineer.

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • - Master of Science degree or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (or related field)

  • - Active Department of Defense Security Clearance

  • - Specialized training in thermal and fluids is desired

  • - Experience in thermal/fluids experimental practice is desired

  • - Experience with the following software is desired: Thermal Desktop, SINDA/FUINT, MATLAB,
      and LabVIEW

  • - Experience with the satellite product life cycle and the interactions among satellite
      subsystems is desired

  • - Experience with satellite thermal management is desired

  • - Familiarity with spacecraft materials and processes is desired
