Mechanical Engineer

Job Description

ATA is seeking a mid-level to experienced mechanical engineer to provide end-to-end mechanical engineering support to an R&D program that will ultimately develop into small-volume high-tech production flight hardware. The candidate will work with and may supervise other engineers and/or technicians on the project. We are seeking a highly motivated individual with strong creative and critical thinking skills, and the desire to be a lead mechanical engineer on projects as well as contribute to technical proposal writing and customer interactions. The ideal candidate would be able to quickly adapt to various types of work, and would quickly learn new skills and analysis methods. The candidate must also be able to work individually or as part of a team environment.

Essential Functions: 

  • - Expected to lead the design, analysis, integration, and test activities of electronics
      packages for airborne and spacecraft applications including specialized sensors, high
      voltage systems

  • - Working with high vacuum systems and instrumentation subjected to high vibrational and
      shock environment

  • - Working with electronics design, assembly, integration, and test

  • - Working with CAD software, including mechanical design and drawings

  • - Performing research oriented (technology development) contracts and rigorous processes
      and procedures associated with building space qualified or production hardware

  • - Must also be able to work individually or as part of a team environment

  • - Represent ATA well with customers

  • - Perform all other duties as assigned

Work Environment: 

This job operates in a professional/secure office environment. This position routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, fax machines and other equipment as needed.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: 

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are nominally Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.


Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.

Primary Location: 

Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, New Mexico

Required Education and Experience: 

  • - Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent and three (3) to five (5) years of experience

  • - Must be a U.S Citizen and able to obtain and maintain a U.S. DoD Security Clearance

  • - Experience with aerospace electronics packaging design, assembly, integration, and test

  • - Experience with CAD software, including mechanical design and drawings

  • - Experience with finite element analysis software and methods

  • - Experience with disciplined Mechanical Engineering Practices

  • - Demonstrated communication skills (technical writing, presentation, proposal writing, etc.)

  • - Demonstrated leadership skills

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • - Master of Science in mechanical engineering or similar discipline with emphasis on static,
      dynamic and thermal analysis

  • - Current U.S. Department of Defense Security Clearance

  • - Experience with space flight hardware (including environmental requirements, standards,
      materials, etc.)

  • - Experience in business development and creating new program opportunities with new and
      existing customers
