Mathematician Machine Learning Specialist

Job Description

The program is seeking a self-motivated, productive, results-oriented student in Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, or related science and engineering program to directly support scientists and engineers in performing statistical analysis, and developing and implementing machine intelligence algorithms. Machine intelligence includes autonomy, data mining, classification, uncertainty quantification, supervised/unsupervised learning and reinforcement learning. The candidate will contribute to implementing existing algorithms as well as help develop uncertainty measures and new algorithms to advance efficacy of machine intelligence. The candidate will work across scientific fields such as astrodynamics and computational imaging. A successful candidate will be familiar with applied probability theory, information theory, and further knowledge of software such as Python, C#, C++, and/or MATLAB® a plus.

Essential Functions: 

  • - Perform exploratory data analysis, data cleaning, program and train various machine learning

  • - In conjunction with government researchers, research and develop new algorithms, identify
      advantages and disadvantages of said algorithms as well as fully document

  • - In conjunction with the group learn new physical relationships in diverse scientific fields

  • - Individual shall be hands-on, willing to learn new subject matters, results-oriented, self-
      reliant, and able to take direction

Required Education and Experience: 

  • - Bachelor’s degree in relevant Science (Mathematics, Physics, etc.) from an accredited four-year

  • - Master’s degree in relevant Science (Mathematics, Physics, etc.) from an accredited university

  • - Good organizational skills and ability to work independently, seeking support from team
      members when required

  • - All work is to be done in a laboratory environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to

  • - U.S. Person able to obtain and maintain a DoD clearance

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • - Current Secret DoD Clearance or higher

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: 

This is a part-time position. It is expected that 10-20 hours per week will be needed, with the exact schedule to be worked out with supervisor. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This position occasionally requires long hours and weekend work.


Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.
