Engineer or Physicist – Part-time BS-level Graduate

Job Description

The program is seeking a self-motivated, productive, results-oriented student in an Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related science and engineering program to directly support scientists and engineers perform characterization and application of energetic charged particle sensors in a fast-paced, highly-agile, team environment. Characterization methods include GEANT4 modeling of detector response functions, evaluation of sensor datasets, and development and prototyping of advanced characterization techniques. The candidate will contribute to bench-level experimental research associated with advancing energetic charged particle detectors. A successful candidate will be familiar with GEANT4 radiation transport software, and further knowledge of software such as MATLAB, LabVIEW, C++, and/or Python a plus.

The duties will include: 

  • - Performing modeling of sensor behavior in GEANT4 to use as a control for all experimentation
     
      and calibration activities

  • - In conjunction with government researchers, provide energetic charged particle detector
     
      calibration support to include data analysis, measurement of deadtime and pileup in detector
     
      response, and planning of calibration campaigns at on-site and remote facilities

  • - Ensuring government researchers are fully familiar with the sensor model and data analysis
     
      routine suite to evaluate sensor performance

  • - In conjunction with government researchers, support analysis of detector anomalies and
     
      develop experiments to verify conclusions

  • - Individual shall be hands-on, results-oriented, and able to take direction from other
     
      group members.

Work Environment: 

This job operates in a professional/secure office environment. This position routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, fax machines, and other equipment as needed.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: 

This is a part-time position. It is expected that 10-20 hours per week will be needed, with the exact schedule to be worked out with supervisor. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This position occasionally requires long hours and weekend work.
 

Travel: 

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.
 

Required Education and Experience: 

  • - Bachelor’s degree in relevant Science (Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Materials, etc.)
     
      from an accredited four-year university

  • - Good organizational skills and ability to work independently, seeking support from team members
     
      when required

  • - All work is to be done in a laboratory environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made

  • - Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Defense Security Clearance

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • - Current U.S. DoD Security Clearance
