Aerospace Systems Engineer

Job Description

ATA is seeking experienced Aerospace System Engineers in support to the Air Force Research Laboratory contracts. The Systems Engineer will be an integral member of a joint Government and contractor team that operates in a very dynamic environment. The System Engineer’s duties will span research and development in formulating concepts, system design, building mockups/prototypes, testing feasibility, designing and conducting experiments, modeling and simulation, preparation for flight experiments and execution of flight experiments. In addition, the Systems Engineer may be required to assist on other contract-related tasks as needed.

ATA engineers, scientists, and researchers are primarily self-directed and self-starters who have the ability to lead small development teams to new technologies and ideas in the areas of modeling and simulation, algorithm development, and systems engineering. ATA Systems Engineers routinely work in collaborative teams consisting of people with diverse backgrounds to quickly develop solutions.

Essential Functions: 

  • - Space system requirements analysis and decomposition

  • - Space system analysis and technology trade studies

  • - Metric and mission utility evaluation

  • - Applications of risk management

  • - Technology integration and transfer

  • - Experimental test and evaluation

  • - Engineering-based modeling, simulation and analysis

  • - Documentation of key processes and products

  • - Require minimum oversight to accomplish directed tasks

  • - Represent ATA well with customers

  • - Perform all other duties as assigned

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: 

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are nominally Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.


Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.

Required Education and Experience: 

  • - Ph.D., or Master of Science and 2+ years of experience, or Bachelor of Science/equivalent
      and 5+ years of experience in Relevant Engineering or Physics program from an
      accredited university

  • - Active Department of Defense Top Secret Security Clearance

  • - Experience in research and development to discover, develop, and transition space technologies
      in Integrated Structural Systems, Guidance, Navigation and Control, Advanced Space Power,
      Space Electronics, Space Communications, Autonomous Systems, Space Situational Awareness,
      OR Modular Open Network Architecture in support to Defensive Space Control, Intelligence,
      Surveillance and Reconnaissance, Responsive Space OR Space Situational Awareness

  • - Experience in research and development to advance Technology Readiness Levels (TRL), and
      demonstrated ability to document the progress of research

  • - Proven leadership experience

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • - Ph.D. and 3+ years of experience, Master of Science and 5+ years of experience, or Bachelor
      of Science/equivalent and 8+ years of experience in relevant Engineering or Physics program
      from an accredited university

  • - Active Top Secret / Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI)

  • - Experience with design, development, testing, and verification of hardware and/or software

  • - MATLAB and/or LabVIEW experience

  • - Experience with ELINT, SIGINT, and COMINT

  • - Experience in business development and creating new program opportunities with new and
      existing customers
