Machine Learning Engineer

Job Description

Applied Technology Associates (ATA) is seeking an experienced Machine Learning Engineer in support to the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Space Vehicles Advanced Technology (SVAT) contract. ATA is supporting AFRL in a variety of areas related to the design and flight of space vehicles. One of those areas is in the application and implementation of machine learning for the guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) of spacecraft. ATA is looking for qualified candidates who are interested in working within a small, agile, innovative team supporting Air Force projects and who share a strong desire to create a work environment that is highly collaborative, rewarding, and fun. The successful candidate will serve as an engineer within AFRL/ATA’s GNC team and contribute to projects by helping with the development of machine learning algorithms and their implementation. Of specific interest is the development of a system to play space-oriented, adversarial games and learn optimal GNC strategies. The group maintains a parallel processing cluster and numerous GNC and orbital dynamic simulation models. We work in a heavily MATLAB-based environment but anticipate using TensorFlow for this work. In addition, the engineer may be required to assist on other Space Vehicles Advanced Technology (SVAT) contract-related tasks as needed.

Work Environment: 

This job operates in a professional/secure office environment. This position routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, fax machines and other equipment as needed.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: 

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are nominally Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
 

Travel: 

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.
 

Required Education and Experience: 

  • - Master of Science in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Statistics from an accredited program

  • - U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DoD security clearance

  • - U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DoD security clearance

  • - Experience building machine learning systems

  • - Experience with Python and/or C++ for machine learning

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • - Ph.D. in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Statistics from an accredited program

  • - Active U.S. DoD TS/SCI security clearance

  • - Experience with TensorFlow

  • - Experience programming in Java

  • - Background in spacecraft dynamics and/or guidance, navigation, and control

  • - Experience with revision control systems such as Git, Mercurial, or Subversion

  • - Background in game theory

Primary Location: 

Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, NM
A remote work with frequent trips to Albuquerque is also possible.
