Thermal Engineer

Job Description

ATA is seeking a beginner Thermal Engineer to support both in-house engineering efforts as well as the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Space Vehicles Advanced Technology (SVAT) contract. At ATA, the Thermal Engineer will provide thermal analysis and/or design services for ATA-developed systems and technologies in various phases of technology development. At AFRL, the engineer will be an integral member of a joint Government and contractor team that operates in a very dynamic environment. The engineer’s duties will span research and development in formulating concepts, system design, building mockups/prototypes, testing feasibility, designing and conducting experiments, modeling and simulation, preparation for flight experiments and execution of flight experiments. In addition, the engineer may be required to assist on other ATA or SVAT contract-related tasks as needed, operating dynamically to provide services to both ATA-internal and external stakeholders.

Essential Functions: 

  • - Thermal system evaluation and analysis

  • - Thermal modeling and simulation (primarily using Thermal Desktop software)

  • - Test/experiment design and execution

  • - Developing specific metrics for system testing and performance

  • - Developing sub-system requirements to meet mission objectives

  • - Laboratory equipment operation and maintenance

  • - Technical presentation and writing

  • - Support Business Development activities, for example:

  • -- Support and/or lead customer interactions

  • -- Identify new opportunities with existing and/or new customers

  • -- Support the capture of new business opportunities

  • - Represent ATA well with customers

  • - Perform all other duties as assigned

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: 

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are nominally Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
 

Required Education and Experience: 

  • - Must to be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance

  • - Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related field) from an accredited university

  • - Must to be able to attain a Department of Defense Security Clearance

  • - Proficiency in using Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • - Strong technical understanding of thermal sciences and advanced mathematical concepts

  • - Experience performing computational engineering modeling and analysis

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • - Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related field)

  • - Active U.S. Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance

  • - Experience with thermal analysis software (especially Thermal Desktop)

  • - Experience with solid modeling tools (especially SolidWorks)

  • - Experience with LabVIEW software

  • - Experience working in technical or laboratory environment

  • - Experience working on team-based engineering projects

  • - Experience using thermal and/or vacuum equipment

  • - Experience developing test plans and executing technical procedures

Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, NM
