Software Engineer

Job Description

The software engineer/systems engineer will serve as a software engineer for the Air Force Research Laboratory Space Vehicles Advanced Technology (SVAT) Contract. The engineer will be an integral member of a joint Government and contractor team that operates in a very dynamic environment. The engineer’s duties will span requirements definition and flow-down, net-centric architecture development, software design, and business development. Secondarily, the engineer may be required to assist on other tasks as needed.

The Engineer should possess both an engineering/scientific education and software development skills. Strong consideration will be given to computer scientists and computer engineers with strong SSA technical backgrounds. ATA engineers, scientists, and researchers are primarily self-directed and self-starters who have the ability to lead small development teams to new technologies and ideas in the areas of modeling and simulation, algorithm development, and systems engineering. ATA software engineers routinely work in collaborative teams consisting of people with diverse backgrounds to quickly develop solutions. ATA employs an Agile Scrum development process when possible.

Essential Functions: 

1. Recent experience in one or more of the following: 

  • - Space surveillance

  • - Space Situational Awareness (SSA)

  • - Ground-based Surveillance Architectures (Radar, Optical, Passive RF)

2. Algorithm development and implementation 

3. Object-oriented software development 

4. Dev Ops skills 

  • - Experience with infrastructure automation tools

  • - Familiarity with Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning

  • - CI (continuous integration) tools

  • - Knowledge of software build cycles

  • - Experience deploying code in a production environment

  • - Database management

  • - Familiarity with multi-tier architectures

5. Agile-based development methodologies 

6. Unit testing and Unit test frameworks 

7. Data structures and small-scale parallelism 

8. Near-real-time data acquisition and processing 

9. Knowledge of control theory and signal processing 

10. Model verification against experimental data

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: 

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. This position regularly requires long hours and weekend work.
 

Required Education and Experience: 

  • - Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent in relevant Engineering (Computer Science, Computer
     
      Engineering, or Software Engineering preferred) from an accredited four-year university

  • - Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Defense Top Secret Clearance

  • - Experience with a variety of programming languages including C++, Java, C#, and Javascript

  • - Demonstrable problem solving and debugging skills

  • - Solid oral and written communication

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • - Master's degree in Computer Engineering, or Software Engineering

  • - Working knowledge of orbital mechanics

  • - Interest in functional programming

  • - Background or work in SSA or other space-related fields

  • - Must possess a current U.S. DoD Top Secret-level security clearance
