Embedded Software/Systems Engineer - Time Transfer

Job Description

The engineer will be a team contributor to the Air Force Research Laboratories Strategic Atomic Navigation Devices and Systems (SANDS) group in support of the development of free-space optical two-way time transfer. The selected individual will support the development and deployment of COTS/custom electronics and embedded software solutions for time transfer systems.

Essential Functions: 

  • - Work with laser scientists/engineers to develop an understanding of existing laboratory
      time transfer capabilities

  • - Assist in electrical/software architecture design for current and future systems

  • - Implement/integrate/test embedded software and operator GUI applications

  • - Design/integrate/test electrical subsystems and cabling

  • - Debug complex embedded/electrical systems in laboratory and field test environments


  • - Minimum B.S. in Electrical/Computer Engineering

  • - Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DoD Secret level security clearance

  • - Experience with C/C++ development in embedded RTOS environments

  • - Experience with electrical system design for signal processing and/or motion control

  • - Experience with electrical schematic review

  • - Experience with hardware troubleshooting in a lab environment (e.g. oscilloscopes, logic


  • - Experience with Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) systems

  • - Experience with Java GUI development (JavaFX)

  • - Experience with embedded software interfaces to FPGA devices

  • - Experience with MATLAB

  • - Current U.S. DoD Security Clearance

Primary Location: Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, NM

Travel: Yes, estimate less than 10% of the time
