Laser Scientist or Engineer – Fiber Lasers and Optical Clocks

Job Description

The scientist will be a team contributor to the Air Force Research Laboratories Strategic Atomic Navigation Devices and Systems (SANDS) group and will assist in the development of optical clocks and free-space optical two-way time transfer. The selected individual will support efforts in the fabrication and evaluation of sophisticated fiber optical systems and provide expertise in free-space optical communications.

Essential Functions: 

  • - Operating complex fiber optical equipment, specifically

  • -- Optical fiber splicing

  • -- Minimum Develop specific metrics for system test, and guidance on laboratory methods to
       test individual system components

  • -- Develop and maintain fiber optical frequency combs

  • -- Advance microcomb technology

  • - Development of a robust, free-space two-way optical time transfer system

  • -- Model turbulent free-space beam propagation

  • -- Design laser communication systems using modern techniques and protocols

  • -- Develop optical steering and pointing systems

  • -- Assist in field testing optical time transfer systems

  • - Generation of PowerPoint presentations and reports detailing key research findings

  • - Ph.D. degree in optics, physics, or a related field from an accredited university

  • - At least two (2) years of experience with ultra-fast and CW fiber laser systems

  • - Significant experience with free-space laser communication systems

  • - Good organizational skills and ability to work independently, seeking support from team
      members when required

  • - U.S. person able to obtain and maintain a Secret DoD clearance


  • - Post-doctoral experience

  • - Experience with optical frequency combs, laser control systems, digital electronics, time/
      frequency measurement and control

  • - Proficiency with PYTHON or similar

  • - Current Secret DoD clearance or higher

Primary Location:Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, NM

Travel: Yes, estimate less than 10% of the time
