Aero-Optical Test Engineer

Job Description

The engineer will serve as an Aero-Optical Test Engineer in support to an Air Force Research Laboratory contract. The engineer will be an integral member of a joint Government and contractor team that operates in a very dynamic environment. The engineer’s duties will include writing code in MATLAB and/or LabVIEW and/or C++ to communicate with various hardware such as adaptive optics mirrors, fast steering mirrors, digital cameras, data collection equipment, and telescope gimbals. The engineer’s duties will also include hands-on optics alignment, conducting laboratory tests, and analyzing test data from optical systems and sensors. In particular, the engineer will be an integral team member in the operation of an Aero-Optical wind tunnel collecting data and measurements in subsonic, transonic, and supersonic air flow environments.


  • - Bachelor of Science degree in relevant Engineering (Optics, Electrical Engineering, or Physics)
      from an accredited four-year university with at least three (3) years of engineering

  • - Experience with low and medium powered lasers, diode lasers, fiber lasers, and solid state lasers

  • - MATLAB/LabVIEW development skills

  • - C++ programming skills

  • - Experience using ZEMAX or similar ray-trace code to design and analyze optics configurations

  • - Working knowledge of geometric and Fourier optics and optics bench alignment techniques and

  • - Minimum one (1) year optics integration experience with an emphasis on bench top
      set up and alignment including use of an interferometer

  • - Experience preparing and executing integration test procedures and supporting integration into
      a larger customer system architecture

  • - Experience ensuring proper setup, configuration, and functionality of systems being deployed

  • - Experience independently troubleshooting software and hardware issues to resolution

  • - Ability to communicate and collaborate with diverse technical teams

  • - Ability to maintain accurate and complete project documentation

  • - Experience working within a collaborative and distributed team environment

  • - Ability to contribute to the development of new processes

  • - Require minimum oversight to accomplish tasks

  • - Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

  • - Perform all other duties as assigned


  • - Experience in optical measurements and computer modeling in transonic and supersonic
      air flow environments

  • - Current Secret clearance or adjudication within the last two years

  • - Knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems

  • - Knowledge of FPGA-based embedded systems

  • - Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Optics, or Physics

  • - Experience with wave-front sensors, adaptive optics, and fast steering mirror control

  • - Published papers and conference presentations

  • - Experience in business development and creating new program opportunities with new and
      existing customers

  • - Demonstrated leadership experience

Primary Location: Albuquerque, NM

Education Level: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent

Travel: Yes, approximately 10% of the time
