Intern Engineer

Job Description

The successful candidate will support the Space Vehicles Advanced Technology (SVAT) Contract, and will be an integral member of a joint Government and contractor team that operates in a very dynamic environment. The intern will support Research and Development (R&D) to discover, develop, and transition spacecraft technologies as defined by Air Force Research Laboratory’s Space Vehicles Directorate, Spacecraft Technology Division (AFRL/RVS) technology areas. These technology areas include but are not limited to: Integrated Structural Systems, Guidance, Navigation and Control, Advance Space Power, Space Communications, Decision Support System, Space Situational Awareness, and Modular Open Network Architecture. The technologies support Defensive Space Control, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, Responsive Space and Space Situational Awareness.

Essential Functions: 

  • - Research and development in formulating concepts, building mockups/prototypes, testing
      feasibility, designing and conducting experiments, modeling and simulation, preparation
      for flight experiments and execution of flight experiments

  • - Performing Engineering modeling and analysis

  • - Performing Laboratory testing including test planning, setup, data collection, and data analysis

  • - Performing Simulation, data capture, and data analysis

  • - Developing designs for technology under development including solid models and machine

  • - Fabricating, assembling, and testing of hardware and test equipment

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: 

This is a temporary part-time position. Expectation is 20 hours/week during our normal Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm work schedule when taking classes, and 40 hours/week during school breaks.

Required Education and Experience: 

  • - Must be a U.S. Citizen

  • - Must to be able to obtain a Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance

  • - Actively pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics, Mathematics, or Engineering

  • - Specific interest in one or more of our space technology research areas

  • - Must demonstrate excellent problem solving skills

  • - Experience performing engineering modeling and analysis

  • - Experience performing laboratory testing including test planning, setup, data collection, and
      data analysis

  • - Experience with simulation, data capture, and data analysis tools

  • - Proficient with Microsoft Office Products

  • - Require minimum oversight to accomplish directed tasks

  • - Must be self-motivated and a self-starter

  • - Must be an excellent team player

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • - Actively pursuing an advanced degree in Physics, Mathematics, or Engineering

  • - Active Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance

  • - Experience performing basic and applied research as it applies to emerging space technologies

  • - Experience advancing the Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) of spacecraft technologies

  • - Demonstrated leadership experience
