FPGA Design Engineer

ATA is currently building a multi-disciplinary engineering team to support the development of embedded processing systems for both commercial and DoD applications. Our primary focus involves the application of state-of-the art, FPGA and System-On-Chip (SOC) devices to high performance video processing, adaptive optics, laser communications, imaging sensors, and a wide range of real-time control systems for inertial measurement units, fast steering mirrors, and stabilized telescopes. Job Description

The successful candidate will serve as an engineer within ATA’s embedded systems group. The initial, core responsibility of this position will be to develop, advance, and sustain firmware that serves as a foundation to host algorithms and software functions for real-time processing and control. ATA is seeking applicants with creative approaches and firmware expertise that will enable our embedded team to rapidly develop applications and innovative IP within SOC devices. ATA is also seeking candidates who possess the interest to develop and apply a rounded skill set while working on a diverse range of applications. As such, secondary responsibilities will include assisting in the design and engineering of miniature electronics as well as the implementation of algorithms within both software and firmware.


  • - Minimum Bachelor of Science in Electrical/Computer Engineering or Computer Science

  • - U.S. citizen with ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance

  • - Strong VHDL programming expertise

  • - Experience with Xilinx SOC devices, 7 series FPGA fabric, and the Vivado design suite

  • - Experience interfacing Xilinx ARM Processors to FPGA fabric using both Xilinx IP as well as
      custom firmware and protocols

  • - Experience with Xilinx high-speed serial interfaces and multi-gigabit communication protocols

  • - Experience with developing FPGA based memory controllers and interfaces

  • - Familiarity with Direct Memory Access (DMA) controllers and local bus interfaces

  • - Some experience writing C for testing purposes

  • - Hands-on hardware troubleshooting in a lab environment (e.g., oscilloscopes, logic analyzers,
      Xilinx ChipScope/ILA etc.)


  • - Master of Science in Electrical/Computer Engineering or Computer Science

  • - Experience with PCB design and schematic capture

  • - Experience with digital video interfaces (CameraLink, CoaXPress, USB3 etc.)

  • - Experience with MATLAB/Simulink

  • - Familiarity with real-time operating systems such as VxWorks, Free-RTOS, QNX etc.

  • - Familiarity with PCI-Express bus and Xilinx PCI-Express endpoint interfaces

  • - Knowledge/interest in high speed video processing and experience mapping algorithms into FPGA
      hardware using Xilinx System Generator and/or SDAccel

  • - Experience with TCL language and script-based management of Xilinx toolchain

  • - Experience with revision control systems such as Git, Mercurial, or Subversion
