Systems Engineer – Electro-Optical Systems

Job Description

The systems engineer will work closely within a team of technical specialists and program management to ensure successful development, test and deployment of prototype systems, particularly electro-optical (EO) systems for ground, air, and satellite applications. These EO systems involve architecting, designing and integrating optics for laser transmission (for both high- and low-power applications), laser communication, and algorithms running on embedded processing electronics for beam control including pointing, acquisition and tracking. The system engineer’s work identifies and manages risk and informs decision making throughout the development lifecycle. This work may include concept studies, design trades, modeling, analysis, and all phase of requirements management including elicitation, flow-down, and negotiation of push-back among subsystems and system options. The system engineer is expected to engage from product conceptualization through design, risk reduction activities, to system assembly, integration, test, and deployment support. The work occurs in a dynamic small business context and requires close coordination with many stakeholders, including other engineers, customers, suppliers, and external team members.


  • - Minimum Bachelor of Science in related technical field with 8 years of experience

  • - Applied systems engineering experience in a prototype product environment

  • - Skill identifying and managing requirements and system internal/external interfaces

  • - Experience identifying and managing risk at component, system and project level

  • - Hands-on familiarity with EO system elements and associated engineering disciplines

  • - Excellent interpersonal skills, written and oral communications and leadership

  • - Facility with Microsoft Office tools and modeling/simulation tools such as MATLAB

  • - Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DoD security clearance


  • - Master’s degree in closely related technical discipline

  • - Domain expertise implementing beam control, pointing, acquisition and tracking

  • - Formal systems engineering training, credentials, and SE community involvement

  • - Facility with SE tool sets, such as DOORS for requirements management

  • - Substantive experience eliciting, analyzing, clarifying, allocating, prioritizing, tracking, managing,
      trading and negotiating requirements with diverse stakeholders

  • - Demonstrated leadership managing risk in fast-paced developmental programs

Primary Location: Albuquerque, NM

Education Level: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent

Travel: Yes, estimate less than 10% of the time
