High Energy Laser (HEL) Chief Engineer

Job Description

ATA is currently recruiting an HEL Chief Engineer to support the development of beam control technology with implementation into high-energy laser (HEL) systems applications. We are looking for candidates who are interested in working within a small, agile, innovative team and who share a strong desire to create a work environment that is highly collaborative, well compensated, rewarding and fun. Core responsibilities include all facets of systems engineering from requirements decomposition, functional allocations, interface definition, verification, validation and test execution for HEL systems in general and beam control technology. Candidates will support all phases of development from conceptual studies, competitive capture, design, fabrication and testing. Ideal candidates will have broad experience in systems engineering practices, modelling and simulation tools, and methods for HEL systems, and experience with HEL design, development and testing.


  • - Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent in relevant Engineering from an accredited

  • - Familiarity or coursework in systems engineering methods and tools

  • - Experience with HEL systems

  • - Basic experience with MATLAB/Simulink

  • - U.S. Person with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DoD security clearance


  • - Master’s Degree, or equivalent, with primary focus in opto-mechanics and/or controls of
      optical systems

  • - Strong background in engineering physics of lasers and optical propagation within atmosphere

  • - Well versed in MATLAB/Simulink and systems engineering tools

  • - Experience in any applied phase of HEL system development and test

  • - Development experience organizing and leading systems engineering efforts of any scale

  • - Experience with HEL system safety in industrial and open-air test environments

  • - Current U.S. DoD Clearance
