Optical Test Engineer

Job Description

The engineer will serve as an optical test engineer in support to an Air Force Research Laboratory contract. The engineer will be an integral member of a joint Government and contractor team that operates in a very dynamic environment. The engineer’s duties will include writing code in MATLAB and/or LabVIEW and/or C++ to communicate with various hardware such as adaptive optics mirrors and fast steering mirrors, digital cameras, data collection equipment, and telescope gimbals. The engineer’s duties will also include hand on optics alignment, conducting laboratory tests and analyzing test data from optical systems and sensors. Must have a working knowledge of geometric and Fourier optics and optics bench alignment techniques and equipment.

Essential Functions: 

  • - Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent in relevant Engineering (Optics, Electrical Engineering,
     
      or Physics) from an accredited four-year university

  • - Experience with low and medium powered lasers, diode lasers, fiber lasers and solid state
     
      lasers

  • - Minimum 1 year of optics integration experience with an emphasis on bench top
     
      set up and alignment including use of an interferometer

  • - MATLAB/LabVIEW development skills

  • - Experience using ZEMAX or similar ray-trace code to design and analyze optics configurations

  • - Ability to communicate and collaborate with diverse technical teams

  • - Ability to maintain accurate and complete project documentation

  • - Experience preparing and executing integration test procedures and supporting integration into a
     
      larger customer system architecture

  • - Experience working within a collaborative, distributed, team environment

  • - Ability to contribute to the development of new processes

  • - Experience ensuring proper setup, configuration, and functionality of systems being deployed

  • - Experience independently troubleshooting software and hardware issues to resolution

  • - Require minimum oversight to accomplish directed tasks

  • - Ability to obtain and maintain a United States DoD TS security clearance

Desired: 

  • - Current United States DoD TS/SCI clearance or adjudication within the last 2 years

  • - Knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems

  • - Knowledge of fpga-based embedded systems

  • - C++ programming skills

  • - Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Optics, or Physics

  • - Experience with wave-front sensors, adaptive optics, and fast steering mirror control

  • - Published papers and conference presentations

  • - Experience in business development and creating new program opportunities with new and
     
      existing customers

  • - Demonstrated leadership experience

Primary Location: Albuquerque, NM
Education Level: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
Travel: Yes, approximately 10% of the time
