Mechanical Engineer

Job Description

ATA is seeking a mid-level mechanical engineer to provide end-to-end mechanical engineering support to diverse R&D programs and small-volume high-tech production contracts. The candidate would be expected to lead the design, analysis, integration, and test activities of precision mechanisms for airborne and spacecraft applications including inertial sensors, scanning mirrors and fast steering mirrors, gimbals, and other related pointing and stabilization systems. The candidate would oversee one or more engineers and/or technicians per project. We are seeking a highly motivated individual with strong creative and critical thinking skills, and the desire to be a lead mechanical engineer on projects as well as contribute to technical proposal writing, customer interactions, etc. The candidate must have demonstrated multi-disciplinary experience and would be expected to serve as the lead engineer or systems engineer for projects in addition to providing mechanical engineering expertise. The ideal candidate would be able to quickly adapt to various types of work, and would quickly learn new skills, analysis methods, etc. while supporting a diverse range of contracts. The candidate must be able to adapt between research-oriented (technology development) contracts and the rigorous processes and procedures associated with building space qualified or production hardware. The candidate must also be able to work individually or as part of a team.


  • - Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience

  • - Experience with precision mechanism design, assembly, integration, and test

  • - Experience with CAD software including mechanical design and drawings

  • - Experience with finite element analysis software and methods

  • - Experience with optical systems

  • - Experience with space flight hardware

  • - Ability to quickly adapt to various different projects and types of work and to work several
      projects simultaneously while managing time and priorities

  • - Ability to work independently or as part of a small team

  • - Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance (Note:
      A clearance will not be required initially, but may be required in the future.)

  • - Demonstrated communication skills (technical writing, presentation, proposal writing, etc.)

  • - Demonstrated leadership skills
