Systems Engineer

Job Description

The successful candidate will serve as a systems engineer for the University Nanosatellite Program (UNP) of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), which is located on Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. One of the objectives of UNP is to grow the future workforce through development and flight of meaningful small satellite missions. This position will serve that objective and provide technical review and guidance for both existing and future UNP missions. This is an entry level or junior position.


  • - Assist with the mentorship of UNP teams through various phases of the program

  •   -- Assist with training students on the basics of mission planning and small satellite design

  •   -- Provide references and guidance for problem-solving efforts

  •   -- Advise students through integration and assembly processes

  •   -- Review presentations and documentation (provide written and verbal feedback)

  • - Assist UNP teams in launch preparation

  •   -- Assist with coordination and execution of environmental test campaigns for university programs

  •   -- Interface with launch providers (including related documentation and requirements verification)

  •   -- Support integration with the launch vehicle

  • - Assist with the programmatics and execution of UNP with respect to cost and schedule

  •   -- Participate in improving program processes

  •   -- Maintain program documentation and relationships with external organizations

Experience/Education Required: 

  • - Bachelor of Engineering in any of the following concentrations: Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical,
      and/or Software (or comparable)

  • - Understanding of systems engineering and related practices with emphasis on space systems

  • - Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

  • - Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Clearance

Preferred Experience: 

  • - Prior work with small satellite design and integration

  • - Experience with handling flight hardware

  • - Proficiency with MATLAB, SolidWorks/CAD, and STK (or comparable tools)

  • - Experience with embedded systems, basic coding skills, board design, structural analyses, and/or
      thermal analyses


  • - Travel is required (up to approximately 25% of your time)

  • - Evening and/or weekend hours may be required
